Our Story.
Mala Šuma began with a piece of land we already loved.
Set within our family’s macadamia orchard on the Hauraki Plains, Mala Šuma grew from a simple idea — to create the kind of place we would want to celebrate in ourselves.
Somewhere beautiful, but not overly polished. Relaxed, but thoughtfully put together. A place where the food is good, the glasses stay full, the music carries into the evening, and the people you love have time to actually enjoy being together.
With more than 15 years in the wedding and events industry, creating celebrations has long been part of our world. Mala Šuma brings that experience home — combining everything we know about how great events work with a place that means something to our family.
Mala Šuma means “little forest” in Croatian, a nod to our family heritage and to the pocket of trees and landscape that surrounds the venue. What started as an idea around our kitchen table has slowly taken shape amongst the orchard, with every part considered to feel like it belongs here.
Mala Šuma is ours, but when you're here, we want it to feel a little bit like yours too.

I’m Kate — and if you’re planning a wedding at Mala Šuma, you’ll be seeing quite a bit of me.
I’ve spent more than 15 years working in weddings and events, from planning and coordinating celebrations to managing a large venue operation and hundreds of events each year. Along the way, I’ve also worked as a celebrant, MC, wedding coordinator and marquee supplier — so there aren’t many sides of a wedding day I haven’t experienced.
At Mala Šuma, I look after the weddings and events side of things — from your first enquiry and venue viewing through to planning, supplier coordination and making sure everything comes together on the day.
I love beautiful spaces and thoughtful details, but more than anything, I believe the best weddings are the ones where everyone feels relaxed, well looked after and free to have a bloody good time.
